CT-02 Corinth - Mycenae - Epidaurus - Ancient Olympia - Delphi
CT-02 Corinth - Mycenae - Epidaurus - Ancient Olympia - Delphi Duration: 4 Days

1st Day - This unique adventure will take you away from Athens, the first stop being the capital of the Mycenean Civilization. Driving on the new highway, you pass through olive fields and numerous small villages. Prominent among them is the village of Megara, the city-state whose inhabitants under the leadership of Byzas colonized Asia Minor and founded the city of Byzantium which later gave its name to the Byzantine Empire. Following the coastal road, you will reach the Corinth Canal, where a stop will be made for photographs. The first effort to build a canal joining the Aegean and the Ionian seas began in the 6th century B.C. As it was impossible to build the canal due to the difficulties they encountered, they devised an ingenious way connecting the two seas. A wooden road with special grooves greased throughout with fat was built by the engineer Periander, dragging the ships from one end to the other. The first serious attempt to build a canal was made by the Roman Emperor Nero but was never completed due to Nero's death a year after the planned project. The present day canal was built from 1881 to 1893 following the designs made by Nero's team of engineers. Continue to the Ancient City of Corinth. Corinth in antiquity was one of the most important classical cities. St. Paul visited Corinth to preach Christianity. See the 6th century B.C. Temple of Apollo and the Market Place, where St. Paul went on trial. From Ancient Corinth, next stop will be Homer's golden Mycenae. Mycenae was a stronghold commanding the road from Corinth to Argos. It was occupied by Greek-speaking people from the second millennium B.C. Mycenae was the royal seat of the Atreus Dynasty and king Agamemnon was the leader of the Achaeans in the war against Troy. Mycenae gave its name to the civilization on Mainland Greece and the Greek islands. Tombs acclaimed for their wealth of objects including golden death masks, jewelry, diadems, bronze weapons inlaid with gold, bracelets and numerous other ornaments were excavated here. The Acropolis is surrounded by massive walls believed to have been built by Cyclops. You will visit these Walls, the Lion's Gate, the Royal Tombs excavated by Schliemann who also excavated Troy in Asia Minor, and the Treasury of Atreus, the latter being a magnificent structure of the 14th century B.C. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant. Overnight in the town of Nafplion.

2nd Day - After breakfast depart to visit the ancient city of Olympia. Here, for more than a thousand years, the greatest athletic festival was held every four years.
Visits will be made to the archaeological site to see the Temples of Hera and Zeus, Council House, Shrine of Pelopes, Treasury, Palaestra, Gymnasium, Guest House, Priest's House and the original Olympic Stadium with its stone starting line. The exquisite statue of Hermes by the sculptor Praxiteles stands in a place of honor. Overnight in Olympia.

3rd Day - After breakfast depart for Rio via Patras, gateway to Italy and the Adriatic coast. At Rio, board a ferry and sail across the Corinthian bay to Antirion. then continue through the picturesque port city of Nafpaktos. Drive along the scenic coastal road to Delphi where the Sanctuary of Apollo stands for over 2600 years. Delphi was home to the famous Oracle, revered by the ancient world. You will see the Treasure Buildings, The sanctuary of Apollo and the Sacred Way. A short distance away is the Archaeological Museum where you will admire the bronze statue of the Charioteer, the Naxian Sphinx and the statue of Antinoos. You will visit either the site or the museum today, then return to your hotel for a rest. Overnight in Delphi.

4th Day - After breakfast continue the visit of Delphi, then depart for Athens via Arachova. A river flowing nearby forming a small cataract near the outskirts of the town, adds a picturesque image to the place, built on the southern slopes of Mount Parnassos. Arachova is famous for hand woven rugs (called Flokati) and quilts as well as natural products such as wine and cheese.
