1st Day -Your tour today is an introduction to the splendor of the culture and mysticism of the ancient world with an in-depth view of Byzantine and post Byzantine Monastical life. Leaving Athens, your tour will head North, passing the towns of Thebes and Levadia where you will make a short stop. Passing the charming village of Arachova continue to Mt. Parnassos to visit historical Delphi where the Sanctuary of Apollo stands for over 2600 years. Delphi was home to the famous Oracle, respected by the whole ancient world. You will see the Treasure Buildings, The sanctuary of Apollo and the Sacred Way. A short distance away is the Archaeological Museum where you will admire the bronze statue of the Charioteer, the Naxian Sphinx and the statue of Antinoos. After lunch your afternoon will be free to browse through this charming town. Overnight in Delphi.
2nd Day - After breakfast depart for the Monastery of Osios Loukas. This monastery is a beautiful example of Byzantine architecture decorated with mosaics from the 11th century. There are also remarkable frescoes and icons painted by Michail Damaskinos. There will be ample time to visit the monastery. After the visit your drive continues through central Greece via the rich and fertile plain of Thessaly and the town of Lamia. This area is known for its tobacco and cotton agriculture. Arrive at Kalambaka, rest of the evening free, overnight in Kalambaka.
3rd Day - After breakfast depart for the breath-taking rock formations of Thesssaly, the Meteora, on top of which the monasteries are built. Precariously hanging over the void, with the Pindus range in the background and the vast plain, woods, gorges and picturesque villages below, these incredible hermitages compose one of the most breathtaking sites on earth. Arriving at Meteora you will visit the monastery of Grand Meteoro and the Church of Transfiguration, built in 1545. Its intricate twelve-sided dome and frescoes depict scenes from the Bible. The library houses rare books, manuscripts and treasures of that era. After the visit, depart for Athens making a stop en route for lunch. After lunch drive through the Thermopylae Pass where the Greek general Leonidas held the Persian invasion at bay with only 300 of his soldiers in the 5th Century BC. A short stop at the monument erected to commemorate this historical battle will be made before you continue to Athens.
