The canal separates the Peloponese from mainland Greece but joins the Aegean to the Ionian Sea.The first attempt to built the canal began in the 6th century B.C. followed by the Roman Emperor Nero's work which again came to an end due to his death. According to Greek legend, Mycenae was the royal seat of the Atreus Dynasty and King Agamemnon was the leader of the Achaeans against Troy. Mycenae gave its name to the civilization on Mainland Greece and the Greek Islands. Tombs discovered here are acclaimed for the wealth of objects found in them, such as golden death masks, jewellery, diadems, bronze weapons inlaid with gold, bracelets and numerous other funerary ornaments.
