1st Day - This unique adventure will take you away from Athens, the first stop being the capital of the Mycenean Civilization. Drive along the new highway passing through olive fields and numerous small villages. Prominent among them is the village of Megara, the city-state whose inhabitants under the leadership of Byzas colonized Asia Minor and founded the city of Byzantium which later gave its name to the Byzantine Empire. Following the coastal road arrive at Corinth Canal where a stop will be made for photographs. The first effort to build a canal joining the Aegean and the Ionian sea began in the 6th century B.C. As it was impossible to build the canal due to the difficulties they encountered, they devised an ingenious way to connect the two seas. A wooden road with special grooves greased throughout with fat was built by the engineer Periander, dragging the ships from one side to the other. The first serious attempt to build a canal was made by the Roman Emperor Nero but was never completed due to Nero's death a year after the planned project. The present day canal was built from 1881 to 1893 following closely the designs made by Nero's engineers. Continue to the Ancient City of Corinth. In antiquity it was one of the most important classical cities, St. Paul visited and preached Christianity here. See the 6th century B.C. Temple of Apollo and the Market Place, where St. Paul went on trial for his preaching. Continue to Homer's golden Mycenae. Mycenae was a stronghold commanding the road from Corinth to Argos. It was occupied by Greek-speaking people from the second millennium B.C. It was the royal seat of the Atreus Dynasty and king Agamemnon was the leader of the Achaeans in the war against Troy. Mycenae gave its name to the civilization on Mainland Greece and the Greek islands.
Tombs renowned by the wealth of objects found in them, such as golden death masks, jewelry, diadems, bronze weapons inlaid with gold, bracelets and numerous other ornaments were excavated here. The Acropolis is surrounded by massive walls believed too have been built by Cyclops. Visit the Cyclopean Walls, the Lion's Gate, the Royal Tombs excavated by Schliemann who also excavated Troy in Asia Minor and the Treasury of Atreus, a magnificent structure of the 14th century B.C. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant. Overnight in the town of Nafplion.
2nd Day - After breakfast depart for the ancient city of Olympia. Here, for more than a thousand years the greatest athletic festival was held every four years.
Visit the site and see the Temples of Hera and Zeus, Council House, Shrine of Pelops, Treasury, Palaestra, Gymnasium, Guest House, Priest's House and the original Olympic Stadium with its stone starting line.
You will also visit the museum with its outstanding collection of impressive statues, pediments, sculptures and relieves from the Temple of Zeus, including the Victory of Paeonis. The exquisite statue of Hermes by the sculptor Praxiteles stands in a place of honor.
3rd Day - After breakfast depart for Rio via the town of Patras, gateway to Italy and the Adriatic coast. At Rio board a ferry and sail across the Corinthian bay to Antirion. Continue the picturesque port city of Nafpaktos along the scenic coastal road to Delphi where the Sanctuary of Apollo stands for over 2600 years. Delphi was home to the famous Oracle, revered by the ancient world. You will see the Treasure Buildings, the sanctuary of Apollo and the Sacred Way. A short distance away is the Archaeological Museum where you will admire the bronze statue of the Charioteer, the Naxian Sphinx and the statue of Antinoos.
You will visit either the site or the museum today and return to your hotel for an afternoon rest. Overnight in Delphi.
4th Day - After breakfast complete your visit of Delphi and depart for Meteora. The drive will take you through central Greece and the fertile plain of Thessaly to the town of Lamia, the region is renown for its tobacco and cotton growing. Arrive at Kalambaka town.
In the afternoon depart for the breath-taking rock formations of Meteora on top of which the monasteries are built. Precariously hanging over the void with the Pindus mountain range in the background and the vast plain, woods, gorges and picturesque villages below, these incredible hermitages compose one of the most breathtaking sites on earth. Arriving at Meteora you will visit the monastery of Grand Meteoro and the church of Transfiguration. Built in 1545 its intricate twelve-sided dome and frescoes depict scenes from the Bible. The library houses rare books, manuscripts and treasures of that era. Overnight in Kalambaka.
5th Day - After breakfast depart via the towns of Trikala and Larissa to the ancient, sacred Macedonian town of Dion, situated at the foot of Mt. Olympus, home to the Twelve Gods of Antiquity. After visiting the site which includes hot baths, mosaics and town planning continue to the second largest city of Greece, Thessaloniki. Visit the museum housing the treasures from Vergina and the tomb of king Philip the 2nd, father of Alexander the Great. An orientation sightseeing drive of the city will follow. Overnight in Thessaloniki.
6th Day - After breakfast depart via Amphipolis, in antiquity the most important Athenian colony in the north of Greece. to Philippi. Here St. Paul preached the Gospe to the Lydians from the banks of the nearby river, the first people in Europe to adopt Christianity. A modern church named ''the Baptistry of the Lydians'' stands on the site. Continue to the port city of Kavala. Return to Thessaloniki, afternoon free at leisure and overnight.
7th Day - Day free at leisure. Optional tour to Argolis to visit Epidaurus, Ancient Mycenae and Nafplion.
8th Day - In the morning drive to Pella, Alexander the Great's capital city. Visit the site and view the exquisite mosaics. Continue to Vergina to visit the burial site of King Philip the 2nd and the famous '''Vergina Treasures'', including murals and frescoes. Return via the city of Veria known for its peaches and wineries to Thessaloniki and overnight.
9th Day - Start the return drive to Athens through the Tempi Valley where the river Pinios flows through Drive past the cities of Larissa and Lamia, centers for the cotton and tobacco industries to the Thermopylae Pass. Here, in antiquity the Greek general Leonidas held the advancing Persian armies at bay with only 300 of his soldiers. A short stop at the monument commemorating the victory of the battle will take place, then continue through Kamena Vourla, a well known Thermal Spring Spa arriving in Athens. End of tour.
