CT-03 Northern Greece - Country Of Alexander The Great Duration: 6 Days

1st Day -Your tour today is an introduction to the splendor of the culture and mysticism of the ancient world with an in-depth view of Byzantine and post Byzantine Monastical life. Leaving Athens behind, drive North, passing the towns of Thebes and Levadia where a short rest stop will be made. Drive past the charming village of Arachova to Mt. Parnassos to visit Delphi where the Sanctuary of Apollo stands for over 2600 years. Delphi was home to the famous Oracle, revered by the ancient world. You will see the Treasure Buildings, the sanctuary of Apollo and the Sacred Way. A short distance away is the Archaeological Museum where you will admire the bronze statue of the Charioteer, the Naxian Sphinx and the statue of Antinoos.
After lunch, free time to browse through the town will be allocated. Overnight in Delphi.

2nd Day - After breakfast, continue with a drive through the fertile plain of Thessaly and the town of Lamia, an area renown for its tobacco and cotton agriculture. Arrive at the breath-taking rock formations of the Meteora, on top of which the monasteries are built. Precariously hanging over the void with the Pindus mountain range range in the background and the vast plain, woods, gorges and picturesque villages below, these incredible hermitages compose one of the most breathtaking sites on earth. At Meteora you will visit the monastery of Grand Meteoro and the Church of Transfiguration. Built in 1545 its intricate twelve-sided dome and frescoes depict scenes from the Bible. The library houses rare books, manuscripts and treasures of that era. After the visit return to the town of Kalambaka. Rest of the evening at leisure, overnight in Kalambaka.

3rd Day - After breakfast depart via the towns of Trikala and Larissa to the ancient, sacred Macedonian town of Dion, situated at the base of Mt. Olympus, home to the Twelve Gods of Antiquity. After visiting the site which includes hot baths, mosaics and town planning, continue to the second largest city of Greece, Thessaloniki. Visit the museum housing the treasures from Vergina and the tomb of king Philip the 2nd, father of Alexander the Great. An orientation sightseeing drive of the city will follow, then dinner and overnight in Thessaloniki.

4th Day - After breakfast depart via Amphipolis, the most important Athenian colony of antiquity in the north of Greece, to Philippi. Here St. Paul preached Christianity to the Lydians from the banks of the nearby river, the first people in Europe to adopt the faith. A modern church named 'the Baptistry of the Lydians' stands on the site. From here continue to the port city of Kavala. In the afternoon return to Thessaloniki. Rest of the day free. Dinner and overnight.

5th Day - In the morning drive to Pella, the capital city of Alexander the Great. Visit the archeological site and see the exquisite mosaics in the museum. Continue to Vergina to visit the burial site of King Philip the 2nd and the famous 'Vergina Treasures', including murals and frescoes. Return via the city of Veria known for its peaches and wineries to Thessaloniki, dinner and overnight.

6th Day - Begin the return drive to Athens via Tempi Valley where the river Pinios flows through. Drive past the towns of Larissa and Lamia, known centers for the cotton and tobacco industries, to the Thermopylae Pass, where in antiquity the Greek general Leonidas held the advancing Persian armies at bay with only 300 of his soldiers. A short stop will be made here at the memorial commemorating that historical battle, then continue through Kamena Vourla, a well known Thermal Spring Spa, to arrive in Athens. End of tour.
