The first Jewish community is believed to have been established in the city of Halkida by Alexander the Great for Judeans captured during the wars. Halkida is 90km north of Athens and boasts one of the oldest Synagogues in Greece. The modern Jewish communities were established towards the end of the 18th century. Although there were communities in many other cities, Athens and Thessaloniki had the largest. Drive past Hadrian's Arch, built to separate the city of the Greeks from the new city of the Romans, the temple of Olympian Zeus, the Parliament building and the tomb of the Unknown Soldier to arrive at Syntagma Square. Here, take a short walk to the Jewish Museum and be briefed in the history of the Jewish community, its contribution to the society and life of this city of Athens. The Jewish community covers a large part of the Athenian society, well respected, suffering no form of racial or social discrimination what so ever. Greeks have always been a multi cultural society, un-accepting or harboring racism. After your visit re-board your coach and proceed to the Synagogue. It was built in 1905 to accommodate the growing community of Athens, which by 1940 numbered 3,000. It is a Sephardic Synagogue. Nearby is a Romaniote Synagogue, open primarily on High Holidays. From the Synagogue you will drive west to the suburb of Nikea to visit the Jewish cemetery and the Holocaust Monument. Drive back to Athens and your hotel.
