SS-09 Jewish Athens
SS-09 Jewish Athens Duration: 5 hours

The first Jewish community is said to have been established in the city of Halkida by Alexander the Great for Judeans captured during his conquering wars. Halkida lies 90km north of Athens and boasts one of the oldest Synagogues in Greece. The modern Jewish communities were established the end of the 18th century. Although there were communities in many cities the largest were in Athens and Thessaloniki. From your hotel you will drive by Hadrian's Arch, which separated the city of the Greeks from the new city of the Romans, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, The Parliament and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to arrive at Syntagma Square. Here take a short walk to the Jewish Museum and be introduced to the history of the Jewish community and its contribution to the society and life in the city of Athens. Present day Jewish community is a large amount of persons very well respected, suffering no racial suppression or discrimination of any sorts. Greeks have always been a multi cultural people and they have never harboured any form of racism. After your visit, rejoin your motor coach and drive to the Synagogue, built in 1905 to accommodate the growing community of Athens which by 1940 numbered 3,000. It is a Sephardic Synagogue. Very close to it there's a Romaniote Synagogue open primarily on High Holidays only. From the Synagogue you will drive west to the suburb of Nikea to visit the Jewish cemetery and the Holocaust Monument. Return to Athens and your hotel.
