Duration: 4 ½ hours
Your tour will take you to the Acropolis where the Parthenon is situated. Symbol of classical architecture, the Parthenon was built entirely of white marble and dedicated to the goddess Athena, patron of the city of Athens. It covers an area of 50 metres across the whole western front of the Acropolis. In its centre stood the life size statue of the goddess Athena made of gold and ivory. Entrance to the Acropolis is through Propylea, "the gates" through which the Pan Athenian processions used to enter the city. The Temple of Athena Nike, known as Wingless Victory is also found here. Next to the Parthenon is the Temple of Erechthyon with its porch supported by exquisitely sculpted lovely young maidens. From the top of the Acropolis panoramic views of the city of Athens can be seen, including the ancient theatre of Herodus Atticus, renowned for its acoustics. Performances highlighting cultural events in the Eastern Mediterranean are still held here every summer. Leaving the Acropolis, drive past the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its Evzones(guards) clad in traditional costume flanking the cenotaph in a guard of honour. Behind the Monument is the Parliament, originally a palace built for King Otto of Bavaria. Continue past the Presidential Palace and the Pan Athenian Stadium. Built entirely of pure white marble, it hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.Drive towards Omonia Square, the commercial centre of the city, passing by the Library, the Academy and the University, their 19th century architecture blended with classical influence. Arrive at Syntagma (Constitution) Square, the business and cultural centre of Athens where time will be allocated to browse or do a little shopping.
