The history of Meteora begins in the 11th century when hermits and ascetics made the caves and rocks of the area their abode. In the 14th century the first monasteries were established reaching a total of 24. At the moment only 4 of the Monasteries are inhabited by monks. The Monasteries of Meteora are unique, built on top of huge rock formations rising 600 meters from the bottom of the valley. In the old days monks were lowered or pulled up in a basket, today, roads bring the visitor closer to the monasteries. The road from Volos to Kalambaka passes through the fertile Thessaly plain. Arriving at the village of Kalambaka continue to the outskirts of town where the Meteora monasteries can be seen. Visit Grand Meteoro monastery with its Church of Transfiguration built in 1545. Its intricate twelve-sided dome and frescoes depict scenes from the Bible. The library houses rare books and priceless treasures. After your visit drive back to Kalambaka for lunch and some free time before the return trip to Volos and the ship.
