This tour will introduce you to the splendor of the Golden Age of Athens as well as the modern city, host to the 2004 Olympic Games. The road to Athens passes by the picturesque harbors of Microlimano and Passalimani as well as several residential areas. Arriving in Athens drive past the tomb of the Unknown Soldier guarded by the 'evzones' dressed in their traditional costume, the Parliament, the Presidential Palace and the Pan Athenian Stadium where the first Olympics of modern times were held in 1896. The whole stadium is built of pure white marble. Continue past the Library, the Academy and the University to Omonia Square, the commercial center of the city and then Syntagma Square, the business and cultural center. Visit the Acropolis, entrance to the top of the hill is through the Propylea, the 'gates' through which the Pan Athenian processions used to enter in antiquity, also built totally of white marble. Next to the gates is the temple of the 'Wingless Victory'. The Parthenon is the major temple built in honor of Goddess Athena, her statue made of gold and ivory decorated the center of the temple. Facing the Parthenon is the smaller temple of Erechthion. From the top of the Acropolis you will be able to admire the ancient theatre of Herodus Atticus with its remarkable acoustics.
Leaving the Acropolis your tour continues north passing the towns of Thebes and Levadia arriving at the charming village of Arachova where lunch will be served (Lunch may also be served at Delphi depending on timing). Continue to Mt. Parnassos to visit historical Delphi where the Sanctuary of Apollo stands. The tour will end at Itea, where you will rejoin your ship.
