Duration: 5½ hours
Visit one of the oldest and most famous ancient cities of Greece situated approximately an hour from Piraeus.
The road from the port will take you westward, past the Hellenic shipyards and along the coast to the Corinth Canal. With a little luck, a ship may be crossing while there. The first effort to build a canal joining the Aegean and the Ionian seas began in the 6th century B.C. As it was impossible to build the canal due to the difficulties they encountered, they found another way to connect the two seas. A wooden road with special grooves greased throughout with fat was built by Periander to help drag the ships from one end to the other. The first serious attempt to build a canal was made by the Roman Emperor Nero but was never completed due to his death a year after the planning of the project. The present day canal was built from 1881 to 1893 following closely the designs made by Nero's engineers.
Arrive at ancient Corinth where a stop will be made at the place where St. Paul lived and preached for two years. Corinth was one of the richest cities in antiquity and played a major part in all events which formulated history for centuries. At the site you will visit the Ancient Agora one of the largest of its kind and the Temple of Apollo (6th c. BC).
