Duration: 2½ hours
Departing from the pier you will drive through the picturesque little port of Scala to the village of Chora where the Monastery of St. John is built. The fortifications surrounding the monastery are a wonder of architecture considering they were built 900 years ago. Entering through the main gate of the fortifications you are directly inside the monastery complex. Starting from the courtyard you will see the monks' dining room and the old bakery. Continue with a visit to the main church with its exquisite decoration and frescoes.
Next stop will be the museum, small in size but immense in the wealth of culture it contains. You will be able to view ancient manuscripts, icons, medieval textiles and vestments, mosaics ecclesiastical ornaments and jewelry. Rejoin your motor coach for the short drive to the Grotto of the Apocalypse where St. John wrote the book of Revelations. St.John lived and wrote the book in this cave, you will see the ledge in the rock that he used as a desk as well as a niche which he used as a head rest when he slept. See also the three-fold crack made by the Voice of God emphasizing the honor of the Trinity. After this visit re-board your coach for the return drive to the port of Scala where tenders will bring you back to the ship.

Notes: Passengers are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a hat with as they will be exposed to the sun for a considerable length of time. Handicapped passengers are advised that they will find this tour extremely strenuous, as there are no appropriate facilities at the sites.
