The first Jewish community is believed to have been established in the city of Halkida by Alexander the Great for Judeans captured during his conquering wars. Halkida lies 90 km north of Athens boasting one of the oldest Synagogues in Greece. The modern Jewish communities were established towards the end of the 18th century. Although there were communities in many cities, the largest were in Athens and Thessaloniki. From the port your tour will drive north-east to the city of Athens. Drive past Hadrian's Arch which separated the city of the Greeks from the new city of the Romans, the temple of Olympian Zeus, the Parliament building and the tomb of the Unknown Soldier to arrive at Syntagma Square. From here take a short walk to the Jewish Museum and be briefed in the history of the Jewish community and its contribution to the society and life of Athens. Present day Jewish community covers a considerable amount of the Athenian society, very well respected, with no racial suppression or discrimination what so ever. Greeks have always been a multi cultural society never harboring any form of racism. After your visit rejoin your motor coach and drive to the Synagogue, built in 1905 to accommodate the growing community of Athens which by 1940 numbered 3,000. It is a Sephardic Synagogue. Very close to it there's a Romaniote Synagogue open primarily on prime holidays only. From the Synagogue you will drive west to the suburb of Nikea to visit the Jewish cemetery and the Holocaust Monument. From the cemetery your tour will drive back to the port and your vessel.
