Duration: 4½ hours
The first art gallery in Europe and one of the first in the world was founded on the Acropolis during the Golden Era of Pericles around 450 BC. Greek artists introduced the techniques of perspective and motion and established forms which are still considered the basics of fine art. It is only appropriate that you be introduced to the form of classic art and design here. You will have the opportunity to appreciate works of art with the help of an expert and try your hand at sketching and drawing some of the classics of history. Find yourself looking at the Parthenon or the Temple of Olympian Zeus from a unique and vantage position and be guided through the techniques of drawing by your art instructor. Leaving the port your tour will drive past the yachting harbors of Zea, Mikrolimano (an interesting subject for your next sketch) and along Syngrou Avenue into Athens. In Athens drive past Hadrian's Arch, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Stadium built totally of white marble to host the first Olympics of modern times in 1896 and arrive at the Acropolis subway station, inaugurated in November 2000. This station is a living museum at the base of the Acropolis exhibiting artefacts found in the vicinity of the Acropolis and parts of the Parthenon. Findings (most of which are exact copies, for safety purposes), are very well exhibited forming a mini-museum at the subway. Here you will be guided through the various forms of art, the highlight of the visit being the Pediment of the Parthenon where you will be shown the use of perspective, the axis and the use of reflection on the marble. At the same time your instructor will brief you on the various techniques of pencil drawing, shadow and perspective. After your visit you will enter the old part of the city called the Plaka and explore the narrow streets lined with picturesque houses dating back a couple of centuries. Here you will be drawing some of the scenes with the hill of the Acropolis towering above. Your instructor will be with you all the time in order to guide you through your first attempt at sketching a Greek scene. From here you will walk past the ancient theatre of Herod Atticus to the base of the hill of the Muses, also known as Philopapou and walk up to a vantage point from where you will have a magnificent view of the classic of all times, the Parthenon. After about one hour of drawing you will join your transportation for an orientation drive of the city before returning to the port where the vessel is waiting.
