Departing from Piraeus for Cape Sounion your drive will take you past the fashionable seaside suburbs of Glyfada, Voula and Vouliagmeni with their beautiful villas and name brand boutiques. Further along the Apollo Coast as the region towards Cape Sounion is known, are the summer resorts of Varkiza, Lagonisi and Saronis. At the top of the promontory at Cape Sounion the Temple of Poseidon, god of the oceans, dominates the area. Built in the austere Doric style in memory of King Aegeas who threw himself to his death from the towering cliffs to the depths of the sea below. In the 19th century, Lord Byron in testament of his visit to the Temple, carved his name on one of its columns, still visible today. Outstanding views and renowned panoramic sunsets reward the visitor to the site. After your guided visit continue inland to the wine producing valleys of Messoghia, passing through the ancient town of Lavrion. Mining in the area dates back to the 7th century BC and was abandoned several decades ago. Today, it is a busy ferry port to the Western Cycladic Islands and West Euboea. Arrive at a winery in Koropi where you will have the opportunity to see how wine is made, in some areas is still produced the traditional way - by stepping on grapes in large cisterns. You will also be shown the up-to-date ways of wine producing. After the guided tour of the winery you will be invited to taste the varieties produced by the winery, accompanied by some locally produced cheese and home baked bread. Those of you with deep affection of wine may drink to your heart's delight all you wish. Should you wish to purchase some to take back home you can do so from the store of the winery. They will pack your purchase in boxes safe and suitable for traveling. Return to Piraeus via the inland route at the beginning, then back onto the coastal road.
