SI-02  Catholic Greece And The Islands Duration: 8 Days

Day 1 Arrival and transfer to hotel. Afternoon Thessaloniki city tour. Paul preached in Thessaloniki during the winters of 49-50 AD and wrote two epistles to the ancient Thessalonians. See the ramparts of the city, the Triumphal Arch of Galerius where Via Egnatia, the road leading all the way to Rome begun, once a strategic gateway of the Roman Empire. Return to hotel and overnight.

Day 2 Visit Philippi where Paul delivered his first sermon in Europe, sowing the seeds of Christianity. Here he baptized a woman named Lydia, the first Christian convert in Europe. The Roman forum, completely excavated dates from after Paul's time. Among the ruins located on the rocky ledge above the town's main road is the prison where Paul and Silas were incarcerated. Continue into the modern port city of Kavala, ancient Neapolis, where Paul accompanied by Silas, Luke and Timothy, first set foot in Europe. Dinner and overnight in Thessaloniki.

Day 3 Depart for Meteora Monasteries. A stop will be made in the town of Veria where St Paul remained for several days on his missionary journey to Athens. Here he founded the first Christian church in Europe and preached in the synagogue for three weeks. Free for lunch. Continue for Meteora. Dinner and overnight in Kalambaka

Day 4 After breakfast visit the Monasteries of Meteora. Perched on top of huge rocks, they seem to be suspended in mid-air. You will see exquisite specimens of Byzantine art. After lunch depart for the Monastery of Koroni Karditas, situated in the South Pindos range of mountains, built in 1123. One of the famous secret schools was established here during the Turkish occupation of 1454 - 1821 where Christianity was preached. The entire interiors of the church are painted with icons of the school of Crete of 1587. The Holy remains of St. Seraphim, St. Trifon and the Apostle Simon the Zealot are found here. After the visit, depart for Kamena Vourla, stopping in Thermopilae for a short break. Arrive in Athens and free time for dinner. Overnight.

Day 5 After breakfast you will visit the Acropolis to see the ruins of the Parthenon, Erectheum and Propylae. You shall also ascend Mars Hill, view the Agora (ancient market place where Paul addressed the Athenians). You will also see the House of Parliament, the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Presidential Palace, Hadrian's Arch and the Pan Athenean Stadium. Continue your tour to Ancient Corinth, to visit one of the oldest and most famous ancient cities of Greece, situated one hour's drive away. The road from the port will take you westward to the Corinth Canal and with a little luck, a ship may be crossing while there. The first serious attempt to build a canal was made by the Roman Emperor Nero but was never completed due to Nero's death a year after the planned project. The present day canal was built from 1881 to 1893 following closely the designs made by Nero's engineers. At Corinth a stop will be made at the spot where St. Paul lived and preached for two years
Corinth was one of the richest cities in antiquity and played a major role in all events that formulated history for many centuries. Visit the ancient city where Paul worked together with Aquila and Priscilla. See the remains of first century shops, the ancient agora, one of the largest of its kind where Paul's trial by Gallio took place and the Temple of Apollo (6th c. BC)

Day 6 After an early breakfast drive to the port for the trip to the island of Tinos.
Afternoon visit of the Catholic sites including the Monastery of the Jesuit Fathers. Founded in 1682 it includes a folk museum of popular art and artifacts from the islands. Dinner and overnight.

Day 7 In the morning continue with your visit, then depart for Syros island and overnight.

Day 8 In the morning begin your visit which includes the Cathedral of St. George and the monastery of the Order of the Capucin Fathers 'St. John the Baptist'.
Transfer to the port for departure to Piraeus. In Piraeus transfer to hotel and rest of the evening free. Dinner and overnight.

Day 9 Transfer to the airport for final departure.
